For a French hotel stay, learn one communication flow instead of a random vocabulary list: give the reservation name, confirm the room and key details, ask about services, report one problem, then check the bill and leave. Room numbers, dates, prices, and times matter more than speaking quickly.
Quick hotel phrase map
| Moment | French phrase | English meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Check-in | J’ai une réservation au nom de… | I have a reservation under the name… |
| Confirmation | Voici ma confirmation. | Here is my confirmation. |
| Breakfast | Le petit déjeuner est-il compris ? | Is breakfast included? |
| Wi-Fi | Quel est le mot de passe du Wi-Fi ? | What is the Wi-Fi password? |
| Room problem | La clé ne fonctionne pas. | The key does not work. |
| Request help | Pouvez-vous envoyer quelqu’un ? | Can you send someone? |
| Check-out | Je voudrais régler la note. | I would like to pay the bill. |
| Luggage | Puis-je laisser mes bagages ici ? | May I leave my luggage here? |
These are reusable frames, not promises about what a particular hotel includes or can provide.
1. Arrive and give the reservation name
| French | English meaning | Pronunciation or confirmation cue |
|---|---|---|
Bonjour, j’ai une réservation au nom de… | Hello, I have a reservation under the name… | keep j’ai une connected; slow down the name |
Voici ma confirmation. | Here is my confirmation. | show the written confirmation while speaking |
La réservation est pour deux nuits. | The reservation is for two nights. | make deux and nuits separate and clear |
Nous sommes deux personnes. | There are two of us. | keep the final s in deux silent before personnes |
If spelling the name is difficult, show the booking document and say Je vais épeler mon nom—I will spell my name. Do not rely on pronunciation alone for a booking reference.
2. Confirm the room and hotel details
| French | English meaning | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
Quel est le numéro de ma chambre ? | What is my room number? | repeat the complete room number |
À quelle heure est le départ ? | What time is check-out? | repeat the hour and day if needed |
Le petit déjeuner est-il compris ? | Is breakfast included? | listen for whether it is included and any price |
À quelle heure est servi le petit déjeuner ? | What time is breakfast served? | confirm the start and end time |
Quel est le mot de passe du Wi-Fi ? | What is the Wi-Fi password? | ask for it in writing if unclear |
Never infer a policy from the phrase. Compris asks whether breakfast is included; it does not assert that it is. Use Vous pouvez l’écrire ?—Can you write it?—for a password, price, address, or schedule.
3. Ask for a practical service
Puis-je avoir une autre clé, s’il vous plaît ?— May I have another key, please?Puis-je avoir une serviette supplémentaire ?— May I have an extra towel?Pouvez-vous appeler un taxi ?— Can you call a taxi?Puis-je laisser mes bagages ici ?— May I leave my luggage here?Est-ce que je peux laisser mes bagages après le départ ?— Can I leave my luggage after check-out?
These are requests. Availability, charges, and storage rules belong to the hotel, so wait for the answer and confirm any number or condition.
4. Report a room problem
Lead with one observable fact. You do not need to explain the cause.
| French | English meaning | Next step |
|---|---|---|
La clé ne fonctionne pas. | The key does not work. | show the key or room number |
Il n’y a pas d’eau chaude. | There is no hot water. | say when you noticed it if asked |
La climatisation ne fonctionne pas. | The air conditioning does not work. | avoid diagnosing the equipment |
Il y a beaucoup de bruit. | There is a lot of noise. | add the location or time if useful |
Pouvez-vous envoyer quelqu’un ? | Can you send someone? | confirm when help may arrive |
If the response is too fast, say Pouvez-vous répéter plus lentement ? or ask À quelle heure ? for the expected time. A clear short problem statement is more useful than a long translated story.
5. Check out and confirm the bill
| French | English meaning | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
Je voudrais régler la note. | I would like to pay the bill. | check the amount before paying |
Pouvez-vous m’expliquer ce montant ? | Can you explain this amount? | point to the line in question |
Puis-je avoir un reçu ? | May I have a receipt? | state whether paper or email matters |
Puis-je laisser mes bagages ici ? | May I leave my luggage here? | confirm location and collection time |
Je reviens à quinze heures, c’est bien ça ? | I return at three p.m., is that right? | wait for an explicit correction or confirmation |
At every stage, repeat back room numbers, dates, prices, and times. For example: Donc, la chambre est la deux cent douze, c’est bien ça ? The goal is confirmed information, not a memorized performance.
Pronunciation focus: hôtel, réservation, chambre
| Word | Broad IPA | Useful cue |
|---|---|---|
hôtel | /o.tɛl/ | the initial h is not pronounced; keep two syllables |
réservation | /ʁe.zɛʁ.va.sjɔ̃/ | keep the final nasal vowel; do not add a full final n |
chambre | /ʃɑ̃bʁ/ | keep the nasal vowel before the consonant group |
Word-level IPA and available recordings can be checked in the French Wiktionary entries for hôtel, réservation, and chambre. Recordings vary by speaker and region. These dictionary references support pronunciation only and do not endorse Parle.
Common mistakes and a correction
- Giving only
réservation: use the full frameJ’ai une réservation au nom de…so staff know the task and name. - Assuming breakfast or a service is included: ask, listen for the answer, and repeat the relevant price or time.
- Translating a room problem into a long explanation: state the observable fact, then ask for help.
- Rushing numbers: say each room number, date, price, or time separately and request written confirmation when needed.
- Treating a recognized phrase as a completed transaction: wait for staff to confirm the booking, request, or payment.
Five-minute practice ladder
- Check in: give a fictional reservation name and show an imaginary confirmation.
- Confirm: ask about one room detail, breakfast, Wi-Fi, and check-out time.
- Request: ask for a key, towel, taxi, or luggage storage.
- Report: state one fictional room problem and ask for help.
- Check out: ask to pay, question one fictional amount, and confirm a luggage collection time.
Use fictional, non-sensitive details during routine practice. Before a real stay, replace them with accurate information from your booking.
Practise the hotel flow in Parle
In Parle, use a speaking mission to hear a reviewed exchange, record one guest response, replay it, and change one detail. Practise the sequence—check in, confirm, request, report, check out—so each phrase has a purpose instead of living as isolated vocabulary.
Phrase Match cannot confirm a booking, room number, price, hotel policy, or that staff understood the request. It only indicates which words from a model phrase speech recognition detected. The real transaction depends on the hotel’s response and your confirmation of the details.
